Student Voice: Beyond the Classroom: My Akita Adventure – Thomas Kirsch, University of Malta, Malta.

Thomas Kirsch, University of Malta, Malta is participating in our exchange program for Spring 2025. We would like to introduce his experience at AIU.

I can confidently say that my stay was truly enjoyable. During my time here, I made several friends with whom I shared mutual learning experiences. An Australian exchange student taught me how to play pool, while I taught a first-year Japanese student German baking techniques. These activities were not only fun but also helped me build meaningful friendships along the way.

What I appreciated most were the field trips that showcased so many different aspects of Akita Prefecture. These experiences created lasting memories that I’m sure I’ll cherish for years to come.

Field Trip to the Tazawa Lake

Regarding my studies, I thoroughly enjoyed my Japanese learning class as it allowed me to deepen my knowledge of the language. What I found particularly valuable and unexpected were the Japanese presentation assignments. My second presentation, which I was especially proud of, gave me the opportunity to talk about my hometown entirely in Japanese—something I never expected to accomplish in a language learning class.

While the coursework was demanding across all my classes, I found it rewarding. Although I wished I could have spent more time with the friends I made, I’m confident I’ll find opportunities to maintain those connections.

Amazing Kanto Performance for New Students

This experience in Akita has not only enhanced my Japanese language skills but also broadened my perspective on friendship and cultural exchange. I’m grateful for every moment and excited to carry these lessons forward in my life.
